The Award is currently in its pilot phase and has a number of students from across the University School involved, here’s what some of them say:

“The Award has highlighted the key skills employers desire and need you to have as a graduate. It really prepares you for the world of work, giving you chance to practice skills, such as teamwork and problem solving, in active workshops, and gives huge support along the way. The Award has been a brilliant opportunity to develop the skills I already had. If you want to further your career, network with top employers, and enhance your CV, then get involved”
Helen Cameron, 2nd year English Language & Communication

Medsin- Innovation Challenge 2010

Warm-up… Thinking caps on, brains fuelled by curry and cider, unsurprisingly uninspiring… A chapatti-floating beer mat. Mark two: Epic Fail. Team bonding – 1 / Innovation idea – Nil.

Spirits sinking as low as the chapattis… Then one night in a student’s troubled bed… A horrible, horrible nightmare….

A stealthy politician snatched the dreams from thousands of young seventeen year olds tucked up innocently in their beds… He thought of a plan to save money!

We have decided to add political value to our balloons running a campaign highlighting the inequalities that will become a part of British society should the proposed Government cuts be implemented.

Being students we want the Welsh Assembly Government to offer assurance that the standards of education are maintained and no one intellectually eligible will be deferred from applying for a University place as a result of financial concerns.

Our innovation challenge campaign targets 200 students; each writing a message in a balloon voicing how the cuts would affect them. These balloons will be left on the doorstep of WAG.  The power of words will cause of the value of balloons to skyrocket if they can help us decrease even slightly the planned £2.9 billion cuts.

PhotoSoc – Innovation Challenge 2010

PhotoSoc decided that an interesting and unusual way to add value to the balloons would be to turn them into ‘Awareness Balls’ for testicular cancer. This is done by filling the balloons with flour and adding dried peas to represent lumps, making a fun and educational tool to discuss self examination! We initially intended to make breasts but found that the bigger balloons were hard to work with and the peas were too small to feel, thereby defeating the point. Testicular cancer awareness ties in with the fundraising project Movember, in which men raise money for testicular cancer charities by growing moustaches throughout November, making it an ideal time to launch our Awareness Balls. We have produced a guide to making these balls yourself at home and thoroughly recommend you have a go, it’s great fun and you can leave them lying around your house to provoke discussion!

Cardiff Asian Society – Innovation Challenge 2010

Balloons? What can you possible do with them? Err… blow them up, perhaps?! Fill them with glitter and pop them? Oh, and don’t forget you can use them as water balloons to chuck at each other! For this challenge we were clueless for a long time! We came up with a huge list filled with some weird and wonderful ideas which included a rubber waterproof sari, puppets, a multi-functional basket and a snazzy globe. However, a trip to IKEA gave us some much needed inspiration. What is the first thing that pops into your head when you think of IKEA? A lamp shade, of course – have you not seen those amazing adverts?! Ok, so the balloons may deflate and fair enough they may burst (to avoid this use an energy saving bulb!) but the lampshade looks special and is a fun thing to do! Made with balloons, wire, cardboard, ribbon, wrapping paper and lots of pizza to fuel some long nights we have managed to make a colourful lampshade suitable for family parties, to brighten up a games room or simply to fill a post drunken COMEPLAY morning! BUBBLESHADE coming to a store near you.

Student Action for Refugees- Innovation Challenge 2010

The balloons will be printed with images of people who are likely to be guests at William and Kate’s wedding i.e. all the royals, Middleton family and famous people. The balloons will be sold exclusively by big issue sellers. People will buy them with the aim of getting a full set of wedding guests. Some of the balloons will be rarer than others and some will have pictures of people who will not be guests at the wedding. People must trade balloons with each other to get a full set of prospective guests. When they believe they have a full set of guests, they must take a picture and send it in to the organisers. Those with the correct guests will go into a draw to win a ticket to William and Kate’s wedding. A second part of the competition will be that people have to take picture of them and their guests in a hilarious situation (comedy value!). The organisers will judge which is the best and reward a prize of £500. This competition will serve financially support the most vulnerable people on our society while publicising the wedding and increasing public involvement.
